This section lists the main rules and requirements for the design and construction of a “competition legal” robot<\/b>.\u00a0 Robots must meet all of these criteria to pass inspection <\/b>prior to the beginning of each tournament.\u00a0 This list is just a summary.\u00a0 There is significantly more detail for each of these rules listed in the game manual<\/b>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

<R1><\/span> Each team can have only one robot<\/b>.  You will make changes to this robot throughout the season.<\/p>\n

<R2> Robots must represent the team’s skill level.<\/span>  Adults can mentor and teach design, building, and programming skills to the students, but students on the team must design, build, and program that team’s robot.<\/p>\n

<R3><\/span> Your robot must pass inspection <\/b>before being cleared to compete.<\/p>\n

<R4><\/b> Violations of robot rules<\/b> (accidentally or intentionally) will result in a team not being able to play until they pass inspection.  However, intentionally violating robot rules to gain an advantage over their fellow competitors will be considered a <G1><\/b> (treat everyone with respect) violation resulting in a disqualification, report to the event partner, and possible disqualification from the event.<\/p>

<R5><\/span> Robots must fit in an 18″ x 18″ x 18″<\/b> volume, checked with the official VEX sizing tool.<\/p>\n

<R6><\/span> Robots may only expand horizontally<\/b> in one direction.  The criteria is listed in rule <SG2><\/b>.<\/p>\n

<R6><\/span> Robots must be safe<\/b>.  They should not have mechanisms that could damage field elements, scoring objects, or other robots.<\/p>\n

<R7><\/span> Robots are built from the VEX V5 <\/b>system using only official VEX V5 components (unless specifically noted within these rules).<\/p>\n

<R8><\/span> Certain non-VEX parts<\/b> are allowed (color filters, non-aerosol-based grease for lubrication, hot glue to secure cables, 1\/4″ diameter or smaller string, bundling material for cables and pneumatic tubing, rubber bands, 3D printed license plates, zip ties…).<\/p>\n

<R9><\/span> Non-functional decorations<\/b> are allowed as long as they don’t affect robot performance.<\/p>\n

<R10><\/span> Team numbers must be displayed on robot license plates<\/b>.  The plates must be placed on at least 2 horizontally opposing sides (not the top).<\/p>\n

<R11><\/span> The robot must let go of scoring objects<\/b> after the match (without requiring the robot to have power after a match).<\/p>\n

<R12><\/span> Robots must use only one VEX V5 brain<\/b>.<\/p>\n

<R13><\/span> Motors <\/b>are limited and the total combined power cannot exceed 88W.  VEX sells both 11W and 5.5W motors and they can be used in any combination.<\/p>\n

<R14><\/span> Robots can only use one V5 battery<\/b> to power the V5 Brain.  (You can use a rechargeable battery pack plugged into the V5 controller during a match.)<\/p>\n

<R15><\/span> No modifications can be made to electronic or pneumatic components<\/b>.<\/p>\n

<R16><\/span> Most modifications to non-electrical components<\/b> are allowed.<\/p>\n

<R17><\/span> Robots must use the VEXnet<\/b> system for wireless communication.<\/p>\n

<R18><\/span> The V5 radio<\/b> should be mounted so that no metal surrounds the radio symbol.  This will help prevent robot communication issues.<\/p>\n

<R19><\/span> A limited amount of non-shattering plastic<\/b> from a single 12″ x 24″ sheet (0.070″ thick) can be used.  These include polycarbonate (lexan), delrin, acetron GP, POM, ABS, PET, nylon, and polypropylene.<\/p>\n

<R20><\/span> A limited amount of tape <\/b>can be used to secure wires, label, decorate.<\/p>\n

<R21><\/span> Certain non-VEX fasteners<\/b> can be used (screws up to 2.5″ long, nuts, washers, standoffs, spacers).<\/p>\n

<R22><\/span> New VEX parts<\/b> released during the competition season are considered legal unless otherwise noted.<\/p>\n

<R23><\/span> Pneumatics <\/b>are limited to a maximum of 2 VEX pneumatic air reservoirs charged to a maximum of 100 psi.<\/p>\n

<R24><\/span> One or two controllers <\/b>can be used to control a single robot.<\/p>\n

<R25><\/b> Custom V5 smart cables<\/b> can be built with non-VEX connectors as long as official smart cable stock is used.<\/p>\n

<R26><\/span> The on\/off power button<\/b> on the V5 brain must be accessible without moving or lifting the robot. <\/p>\n

<R27><\/span> A “Competition Template”<\/b> must be used in your program with “when started<\/b>,” “when driver control<\/b>,” and “when autonomous<\/b>” sections.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
